The judge said Wadsworth had displayed 'no remorse' for the murder of the woman he 'professed to have once loved'. The judge, describing Wadsworth as a 'violent and dangerous man', used 'character assassination' against Ms Belshaw during the trial to shift blame.

She describes Ms Belshaw as a 'loving and loved daughter, sister and mother', who may have 'made some mistakes' but was 'still only young and was seeking to turn her life around'.

Referencing the count of murder, he says the defence contends the starting point would be 15 years, but acknowledges 25 years is 'perhaps the point that the court is likely to alight upon'. He realises it will be many many years, if ever, he will regain his liberty.
