He started painting at an early age and was accepted to the Professional Scenic Arts High School in Plovdiv, where he graduated in the early s. While in school, Mitovski made his first short animation film on 16mm - "Absurd". The film received an award at a short film festival and was re-shot professionally on 35 mm at the Bulgarian Animation Studios.

While actively pursuing his interest in painting, Mitovski made two more short films and also played drums. With his classmates he formed "Band Falconeti Electric" - an electric-rock band, which recorded two unreleased albums. His passion for music was instrumental to his future career as a music video director. His first breakthrough came while still a student with the video "Composer" of the legendary Bulgarian pop-rock band FSB Grammy award winners in With its innovative vision "Composer" soon became the most popular and beloved music video in the country.

A few years later Mitovski made a feature-length documentary about the band, noted again for its brave visual style and innovative approach to the genre. Mitovski continued directing music videos and commercials, winning many local and international awards for his work. His first major fiction film recognition came in when his short film "Get the Rabbit Back" co-directed with Kamen Kalev was nominated for the Critics' Week at the Cannes Film Festival.
